Jodrell Bank Observatory

Stargazing LIVE returns to BBC 2 tonight, and to markĀ the new seriesĀ BBC Radio 5 live's Tony Livesey will be broadcasting live from the set on Tuesday night from 10.30pm.

The show is filmed at the Jodrell Bank Observatory, which is run by Manchester University, and is located in the leafy Cheshire countryside.

The main radio telescope is the Lovell telescope and is a one of the most stunning scientific landmarks in the UK. It’s searched for the Mars Observer, tracked Sputnik, and received the first pictures from the ā€˜dark’ side of the Moon. And in Dr Who, Tom Baker fell to his "death" from one of the walkways.

Tony’s show will be delving deeper in the mysteries and wonders of space, and astronomy. You’ll be able to put your questions to a panel of experts, and we’ll be finding out more about the work they do at the Jodrell Bank Observatory.

Tony and I visited earlier this month, and got the chance to climb up the telescope. It was a surreal experience – very quiet and almost blinding in the sunlight.

You can’t see over the edges, so you have no concept of how high up you are. You just have the sides of the dish curving around you.

I feel very lucky; whenever I see Jodrell Bank in future, I will look out for the superb piece of engineering and think "I“ve stood on that".
