The question Labour has to answer
"Why should I give a stuff?" It doesn't get much more blunt, but, ultimately, it's the one question Labour activists here know most people are asking about this conference.
The party that for so long sat on the top of the pile at Westminster is, to many, the third most interesting party in British politics. Some even mutter the fourth: the SNP are in government in Scotland.
So the next few days are all about Ed Miliband trying to prove Labour are relevant and credible - and therefore worth listening to.
Their idea to limit university tuition fees in England to £6,000 a year, down from the current cap of £9,000, is certainly eye catching. A specific idea that has generated headlines and will generate debate.
It's also generated forensic scrutiny. How will this be paid for? Is this a lurch to the left? Will this be in Labour's manifesto at the next election, or is it just a wheeze for now?
Listening to Stephen Nolan's typically probing interview with Shadow Communities Secretary Caroline Flint on 5live on Saturday night, another question also popped into my mind: when did she and her fellow shadow cabinet ministers actually get told about the idea?

This is why any genuine 'socialist' should cringe when they hear the Tories and their Lib Dem Poodles continually state that they inherited an economic mess created by Labour! It was and still is a mess created principally by the global financial meltdown but worsened here in the UK by a Tory government that called itself 'New' Labour and now continued by the official Tory Party!

The question I have is why anyone with more brain cells than digits on their hands and toes would vote for a labour govt again, The current Govt DID inherit an almighty mess - some people are just in denial eg Mstr Attack dog; Edward balls.
Apologies for typing and any mistakes but a recent stroke has left me without the proper use of my left hand; my brain, however, is still functioning alright!

Is not government borrowing at an all time high despite the cuts?
The economy is not growing, youth unemployment is at a record high, unemployment in general is rising, there is growing risk of a double dip recession.
Without growth cuts alone will not clear the deficit.
Does Osborne have a plan B because the current Tory economic policy is not working?
The way the Tories spin it the worldwide banking crisis, US subprime mortgages, the Euro crisis are all Labour's faults. Yes Labour made mistakes but it could be argued that Darlings actions in bailing out the banks saved the UK from an even worst recession. There is also the chance that the UK will make a profit once the banks are sold off. The Tories need to take action to get the economy growing rather than simply using the deficit as an excuse to push through excessive and damaging cuts while attempting to demonise public sector workers.
The question I have is why anyone with more brain cells than digits on their hands and toes would trust the Tories with the NHS?

The question is why would anyone want to vote for a Labour government again that's blighted with a leadership and a PLP full of reformist Tories! There will always be divisions in Labour as long as this is the case and which the Tories can exploit whether in or out of government.
Zal: Ed Miliband leading the Labour Party today is what results when the Labour leadership contest that ensued the election defeat was a media orientated affair that was more on par with an episode of the Apprentice where the candidates were on their bended knees seeking employment by the likes of Sir Alan Sugar.

I heard Nolan with both Caroline Flint and Angela Eagle. The Irish attack dog managed to run rings round both ladies who have been stymied by newspaper articles they clearly hadn't heard about. Weak. It all sounded as if it was going to be even more mess if Labour is returned after the next General election. There again sounds as if two parties operate within the one name, and this will be a repeat election disaster for Labour if they don't wake up.

It's been screamed out all day by the media that the public trust the Tories more on the economy! Is it any wonder when 'Blue' Labour's economic policy is Tory policy!

Rather a capitalist economy manages the government and the leader regardless of what pretty speeches they make before election which merely prey on political apathy!who the leader is or how many prior speeches they made beforehand claiming they'll curb the powers of big business!
If Ed Milibands speech was considered left wing then Karl Marx must have been to the right of Hitler! Such drivel highlights how right wing political culture is is entrenched in the UK today! If anything Miliband's leadership epitomises how Labour have capitulated to every aspect of Tory ideology and if his speech stands out at all compared to past Labour leaders then at least he admits he's a Tory before he's hardly even started!
Only sheep follow leaders!
It's alternative policies democratically decided by members of a political party that matter!
