Wimbledon 2011: 5 live digital coverage

How many BBC journalists and support staff are at Wimbledon this year? Firstly radio staff, secondly television. Answer please from someone who takes this question as seriously as it is asked.

And could you please tell me what I am supposed to get from live streaming of the commentators?

Live streaming of the commentators will be really intresting,the expressions and mannerisms of the Commenators will be intresting, as well as the general Chemistry between the different members of the commentary team.



Also i hope the BBC are not cowered by the Daily Mail Red Arrow fanatics, and send as many people as they deem neccessary to provide excellant coverage.

You can barely see them as it is dark and the camera is skewed. Annabel Croft in the far distance and the back of the nearest person's head. Talk about waste of time and money.



As for numbers providing coverage, just what does that have to do with the Daily Mail? Nothing. Licence fees are going down the drain. I want to know did Terry Wogan pay for his tickets? How many "managers" from the whole of the BBC have found it necessary to pop down to SW19 for a few meetings? Why on earth isn't that a good question to expect an answer for in the current state of the BBC finances?

Can you imagine the taxi fees alone for the hoardes of BBC staff at Wimbledon? I only say this because without trying, I have managed to count 10 in an hour and that's without any backroom staff.

Why does the Breakfast weatherman have to be at Wimbledon?



Warning: much of the podcast is of the worst student radio quality. 13 days to go, oh dear.

Why does Bacon have to be there? Just give him two weeks off. If people like his normal show then thats up to them - good luck to him. But why should he spoil my two weeks of Wimbledon. At least when Five send Evans to the Masters or the Open he does genuinley know Golf and what the tournaments are about. Bacon wouldn't know one end of a racket from another.

I personally don't care how much the BBC spend on coverage. I just want it to be good. Monday was poor on the radio. Get me Inverdale quick!

I went to see the Senna documentry last night (brilliant), got back in my car and wanted to hear how Murray had got on......What I got was 'debate' as to whether Mcleish has made the right decision going to Villa. I'm sure someone was on one of these blogs the other week claiming that Five wasn't 'footballcentric'. This really is a nothing story. Very poor, I hope the trust come to some quick conclusions.

Clare Balding has been excellent as usual; she really should have got the breakfast gig. Yesterday Bacon was poor, he was irritating and clueless about tennis - some things never change.

What do you think about the streaming Dom? In my opinion it is a waste of time and money as you are simply looking at the profile of the nearest to the camera and everyone else in the box, describing a game I could watch being streamed from BBC1 or 2.

Carrie I think streaming is a waste of time, if I could be in front of a TV I would be watching it rather than listening. Also you can watch the live coverage on the BBC Sport website so what is the point of a webcam pointing at a commentator?

I'm so pleased Bacon was to tell us - again - that he has been lucky with his Olympic ticket application. Even the BBC's Olympic correspondent Gordon Farquahar seems to have been lucky. How wonderful. So on the days Richard and Gordon don't have tickets for events, they can pop along to Stratford and do broadcasts just like they do during Wimbledon, when they also don't have tickets but they do have that good old magic "media pass". Win win.

I'm just curious who I seem to see sitting in the same centre court seat at every match. He sits in the players box area in the left hand section, back row next to the steps. 5 live should only send the regular sports presenters and journalists to Wimbledon - no Bacon, no Derbyshire, no Campbell, just Overend, Pougatch, Balding etc.

Has it been mentioned on air why Mark Pougatch, Michael Stich and Todd Woodbridge are not part of the team this year? Mark Pougatch was in the press release.



I would have Pougatch or Ian Payne hosting then Clare Balding taking over.



P.S. Helen Skelton is alright!

The podcast is mostly puerile nonsense based on the input of Skelton. Remove her and her poor broadcasting skills and poor radio voice and it would have some value for anyone wanting a podcast-type overview.

If this event, and the sport is ever going to become more than a social event - a BBC staff party, aspirant middle England club members quaffing Pimms - it needs a broadcaster to drop the chums who never made it beyond a wild-card first round and other assorted sycophants. As suggested, above, it needs Poogie - all day every day - and a single commentator describing the play. What it doesn't need is shopping channel voice-overs and speculation, "ooh, Sir Brucie might be here...There's Terry in his blazer....Doesn't Sophie Rayworth like lovely in that frock?...." It's become a joke, a pantomime - with few, other than the usual suspects participating - because the BBC have made it so. It's time a different broadcaster turned it professional.

It's the in-crowd. Licence payers are out of fashion.

Naturally the answer is embarrassing, so best ignored by Hasit, Nigel, AV-K or whoever.

Re. how many BBC staff and mates at Wimbledon; you could send a F.of I. request, which will be ignored on "editorial...commercial...competition grounds." Or you could guess. Mine would be everyone

not on holiday or heading up north in a transit van.

Someone at 5live needs to be told that the sport should come first before the Hello mag style broadcasting.

#29. Hi Carrie, if your referring to Mark Pougatch then yes he is freelance (hence his appearance on ITV Sport covering FA Cup and the IPL) but he was listed as presenting the second half of the day's coverage in the Radio Times and the BBC press release just last Friday.



Shame he is missing as he has been a good presenter in recent years and obviously misses the years that clash with world cups.



I'm expecting he will not be part of Five Live's team at the Open Championship golf again this year, he missed last year for no apparent reason, the year before he missed because of the ashes. I think this year he may have a TV role, which he had at the Masters. Hopefully this will mean Russell J Fuller will return to the Five Live commentary team at the open.

Weatherman is still presenting from Wimbledon. Plus Riley. When I switched on the tv so was the tv weather presenter. Plus Hollins.



On radio is it really necessary to have the weatherman telling us the national weather from SW19?



Next year Wimbledon fortnight is moving to Ordsall Park. It is only fair.

With so many BBC people at Wimbledon as of right, when the move to Salford is complete I guess the annual travelling and living expenses claims to get to SW19 will be added to the outrageous cost of the move.

Sorry to go off-topic here but in reply to myself if anyone is interested both Mark Pougatch and Russell J Fuller will be part of the BBC team at the Open Championship which is a shame, both will be missed on Five Live.



P.S. With the dissapointing news yesterday that Laura Kunessburg is leaving the BBC will she still be presenting a show on Five Live this summer?

If he was allowed to chair the 'Your Call' session at 9am in the same tough way he deals with these idiot time wasting "hello John how are you, I'm so proud to talk to you John" type callers on the '6 Love 6, programme on Tennis then we might get back to some semblance of a decent phone-in on real poliitc issues.

Yesterday, Wimbledon 5live team gave airtime to a text message saying "English people support the Swiss and Spanish and never grumpy Scots". This caused great offence to me and not only Scots, but I'm sure English also. Please do not wonder why we do not get behind the English and foul mouthed players like Wayne Rooney.

I understand that the gentleman "sparks" was asking about takes the players friends and family from the lounge area to the box area and then away after the match. For that he gets a seat. He has been doing it for years now

Well done BBC and well done Sue Barker - today's introduction of the heros of our armed forces staff present today was a much welcomed and well deserved change from the usual politically correct attempts to stifle the acclaim and justified appreciation these men and women deserve and most certainly get from the overwelming majority of the public. It's high time we saw more of this at public occasions - the Americans do it without thinking twice - at last BBC you have got it right. This for me will remain the best part of Wimbledon whatever the outcome.
