Champions League Final: the United fan

Manchester United fans

"It's a make-shift side showing up for a testimonial, why would I want to go?" I asked my mate in August 1991. Man U were to play a Republic of Ireland XI as a pre-season warm-up. Frankly, if we weren't going for drinks beforehand I probably would have skipped it.

We got there in time to see the support act. Five United stars from the past versus five City players. George Best was on the wing and the entire Stretford End roared as one. I was hooked. The game itself was a 1-1 draw. Paul Parker made his debut by doing a forward roll in the centre circle. Given the injury problems that followed, it was a brave move.

Why am I telling you all this? It's how my love affair started. Like any relationship, it has its highs and lows. I still fear European ties that involve Turkish clubs.

The memory of standing at Maine Road and being pelted with Turkish Delight bars in 1993 is still painful (mind you, the joy of being 2-0 down at half time and winning the derby 3-2 kind of makes up for it.)

I loved watching Eric Cantona play, and hated being at the news conference where Fergie announced the Frenchman was retiring.

Even becoming a dad affected my support. Our little boy was born in London but it's a bit more specific than that on his passport. For the rest of his life he's saddled with PLACE OF BIRTH - CHELSEA. I know you should support your home team, but no Red will ever feel comfortable with that.

I am your 'typical' Man U supporter. I'm not from Manchester, and I live in London. I don't make it to many games, either home or away. I'm one up on a few others as I've been to the ground and everything, but I know I'm missing that extra bit that makes me a die-hard Red.

It won't stop me having a whinge or a whine. But even then its not like being a fan of other teams. When we whinge it's because we didn't win the League and only made the top few places, or got knocked out of the cup in the semi finals. It's never because we're in a relegation battle, or our future is at stake. It's a different way of being a fan - lots and lots of highs with few lows, but we still want to have our moan over a pint or on the radio.

So it's no wonder other fans don't like us. Compared to most clubs, we have all you could wish for and we still aren't happy. 19 titles and the final of the Champions League is a great season no matter how you look at it, but will we whine if Barcelona beat us? You bet!

Here's your warning: the next sentence is going to sound really arrogant (I told you I was a "typical" fan.) We are starting the match as underdogs, something Man U aren't used to. Barcelona are clear favourites for the final. They are a joy to watch and even just a few weeks ago I thought, quietly to myself, that there's no chance we can win. Our critics say we have no hope either. Gary Lineker says all Barca have to do is turn up and they are champions.

But we've had some good wins over them. Fergie's first European silverware came on a rainy night in Rotterdam in 1991 when we beat the Barcelona dream team led by Johann Cruyff. Okay we were soundly beaten by the Xavi and Iniesta-inspired side two years ago, but there's always that belief that we can win. A good game from Rooney and our famous footballer on the wing (am I allowed to name him?) and we can beat anyone on the day.

So come Saturday night I'll be there as usual, supporting my team from the safety of my sitting room. I'll pace the floor, scream at the TV at any injustice that comes our way and watch as my dog runs off and hides under the table as my noise level rises with every passing minute. No matter what result, my child's education must continue. I'll explain to him again why red is always better than blue and he'll have his normal response: "Silly daddy."

Ok, so you yourself may not be United's most die-hard fan - and not everybody can be. But you completely ignore the fact that United do have a huge number fantastic supporters, and you don't have to look far to find them, which I think is a point all too often missed and you had the chance to set the record straight on that front. And please, please, please do not call us Man U. If you don't know why, please research it.

Man Utd lost. Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

  • Comment number 3.

Oh dear, nothing about the play offs at all.

Carrie, if you remember one poor blighter has to cover eight or so counties in the south of England as regional journalist .. "ridiculously huge" I think was the expression so I suspect he couldn't muster the energy to post about Reading's prospects and Wales isn't in the North West or the Midlands so it's naturally ignored.

Manchester is the centre of the BBC universe so naturally we've had a post about Man Utd though.

The most democratic station in the country indeed.

And no cricket blog via 5Live SE either. All the 5 Live staffers are Manchester/Liverpool football supporting Philistines. All the best to you ryanw.

"And no cricket blog via 5Live SE either. All the 5 Live staffers are Manchester/Liverpool football supporting Philistines"

Sorry Carrie but do your comments are so provactive i have to respond, do you deliberately try to think of something negative for every blog, or do you actually belideve the things you post?

I dont think 5live are obliged to provide this blog,so maybe the likely answer why there was no Play off or Cricket blog was because 5live staff were to busy to write 1,and to be honest TMS have got their own website which in it they publish a blog, as well as other articles from 5live staff, so it seems like a waste of time to publish duplicated information on this blog.

  • Comment number 8.

Apologies for the errors i am in a bit of a rush, but i think you will accept my point Carrie that you are being a bit harsh in complaining about lack of a Cricket blog.

  • Comment number 9.

Strangely yes, I do believe the things that I post. Doesn't everyone? Naturally this response is therefore a bit negative.

I think if 5 Live staffers have time to write about their passion for football, then if no cricket or rugby-loving staffer can be found to do the same for those sports then it is worth mentioning that it is a shame. I was hardly being harsh in saying what I did.

I know there are blogs elsewhere on the sport pages. But I am talking about the personal interests of 5 Live staffers as seen on these pages, and it seems the sporting interests of these people amounts to football.

  • Comment number 10.

Yes but the point is 5live staffers as you put it, blog about Cricket on the TMS page, its a bit pointless putting a Cricket blog on the 5liveblog, because naturally 5live Cricket fans will use the TMS site rather than this 1.

Some recent contributers include Kevin Howells and Aggers both 5live staffers.

  • Comment number 11.

Of course Carrie is right in what she says.Three Champions League blogs but no blogs at all for the Play Off Finals , the final of the Rugby Union Championship and the England cricket Test Match and all of which 5live broadcast. There is absolutely no excuse for not having at least one blog covering a different sport/event over the weekend .Very poor 5live, very poor indeed.Strangely enough there IS a blog about a sports presenter and a very good one at that, who is leaving the station. Can't quite work out where the priorities are with this news/sports station and their blogging commitments?

  • Comment number 12.

Binke TMS which is a 5live show, has its own website where 5live staff have blogged about the England Test match https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/tomfordyce/2011/05/englands_odd_couple_produce_ag.html whats the point in dupliacting that blog here, when most 5live cricket fans will use the TMS site rather then this?

  • Comment number 13.

Or you can even join TMS on Facebook, where you can post anything about Cricket Coverage from 5live till till your heart's content, with 14,000 likes for the TMS Facebook page, what more can you ask for!!

  • Comment number 14.

Fedster, Kevin Howells and Aggers are cricket staff. The point I am making is that all the football blogs on here have been written by backroom journalists of the station and it seems they are only football mad staff, there are no backroom staff who have written anything about any other sport. I KNOW there are sport blogs elsewhere, and the point is if I have to read about all other sports on the blog pages not on this page of blogs, then why are football pieces here and not on the sports blog pages? I can't make it clearer than that.

  • Comment number 15.

Some fair points made here. On one hand, people following other events/sports could legitimately wonder why specific their interest isn't covered here. But on the other, we can't blog about every single thing.

Basically, I felt the United game was by far the biggest event of the weekend, and crucially for this blog, it attracted the most coverage on 5 live.

  • Comment number 16.

Hasit/Carrie my point is i dont see the point in having a Cricket blog on here, because your target audience for Cricket are using the TMS site, why have 2 blogs in 2 places, when both will be similar in nature?

Also Hasit do you accept you made a bit of a hash in your Champions League blogs, by not including any details on 5lives actual coverage, i thought it would be pretty obvious to include details on 5lives coverage, why was this not included?

Also post 12 has been under consideration since yesterday, could you please pass it or bin it thanks.

  • Comment number 17.

Fedester - No, I don't think so. A few weeks ago, my colleague Mark Williams wrote a very good piece about how 5 live Sport's Saturday edition is put together, and that covers what goes on behind the scenes. I don't think the Champions league programme was substantially different from a production point of view.

  • Comment number 18.

Sorry Hasit but i am going to be pendantic now, the Blog by Mark Williams was fantastic, those are the type of blogs i think people would like to see, but going back to Paul Armstrongs blogs, why was it that BBC Sport back in the day were able to publish a detailed Production Blog everytime BBC TV covered a live football game, but 5live are not able to do the same thing.

The Blogs by Paul were extremly popular, which gives an indication to what people enjoy reading, come on Hasit give us more blogs like this please!!

  • Comment number 19.

I think you are totally wrong Hasit.Three blogs on the Champions League Final and total overkill on 5live is not my idea of fair coverage on a national radio station.I just had to switch off.One is beginning to wonder if a team outside of Manchester/North West or London ever gets to a Champions League Final in future would 5live have such blanket coverage.Ratings don't impress me I just want other sports/teams to be given a look in otherwise it becomes a total borefest of Manchester/London football chat.

Binkie the CL Final was the biggest sporting event on 5live in ages, the popularity of it is reflected in the viewing figures, the stadium was rammed, with people being prepared to pay thousands on the black market.

Why should the Cricket be given a look in, when people cant even be bothered to fill the stadium, just shows you to lack of intrest in the match, the blogs published give you an indication of what people want to see.

For me Hasit you have got it spot on with the number of blogs, and what Sports you are concentrating on.

  • Comment number 21.

This comment was removed because the moderators found it broke the house rules. Explain.

  • Comment number 22.

What utter codswallop. How can a number of 5live blogs define popularity ? Your argument is redundant.Wembley was full for the play off final as was Twickenham for the Rugby Union final but no blogs.By the way there was a fantastic finish to the test match yesterday regardless of how many where there.Wales is hardly the bedrock of cricket in the UK.

  • Comment number 23.

Binkie as Hasit has said, he cannot post a blog for everything 5live covers because it is not practical, and as he said the CL final was the biggest event of the Weekend, attracting the most coverage thus there was 3 blogs.

  • Comment number 24.

Of course it is practical.Forget the Champions League ,this was the biggest weekend in the Rugby Union League and Football play off calendar. Its not asking for alot is it ? A blog should have been provided and no excuses.

  • Comment number 25.

Might I suggest a solution to this impasse. A question I posed a week or more ago which was typically ignored by Hasit.

How about an OPEN THREAD once a week so that posters can discuss whatever they like, Cricket, Champions League, Rugby League, Union etc.

I also note that many of my posts are being targeted and removed (so much for the most democratic station in the country) while others posts tangential and off topic posts and get away with it.

    So Hasit... OPEN THREAD.

Can we have an answer please... it requires no effort on your part.

  • Comment number 26.

A fantastic idea of an Open Thread ryan and one which would be very welcome to all I'm sure.Hasit....... its over to you.

  • Comment number 27.

I guess the prerequisite for a job anywhere on 5 Live is a football team you can be passionate about. One when you write a blog about it you can say "we" as if you are somehow connected to a team. It is not fulfilling its remit as the golf, cricket and rugby over the weekend was highly important to many listeners who will ahve been alienated by the MUFC obsession.

Roll on full time Salford then you can stop pretending you are a national station and just put yourselves up as a North West station and be done with everyone else. So the other 54 million or so people can just go hang.

I'm afraid it should be called 5Live Football. Just put the other tat on 5Live Sports Extra.

  • Comment number 28.

This idea about everyone being interested in only Man Utd last Saturday is total garbage.Personally I could not have cared less if they had won or lost.It seems to be all part of the usual now north west mafia 5live content.

  • Comment number 29.

There won't be an open thread. There's no substantial difference between that and a message board.

I think this discussion has run its course. Everyone's had a chance to give their opinion, and the thread's no longer anything to do with Pete's piece, so I'm closing it.
