FA Cup Third Round on 5 live

Post categories: ,

Adrian Hughes - 5 live journalist|18:10 UK time, Friday, 7 January 2011

Christmas and New Year are over, the weather is miserable and it's been freezing for weeks. January can be grim at the best of times unless there's something to look forward to, so whoever thought of putting the third round of the FA Cup at the start of the month should be given a medal!

One of my favourite quotes about being a football fan came from Adrian Chiles, during his 5 live years. He used to talk (a lot) about West Brom's promotion or (more often) relegation prospects. He used to say: "It's not the despair that bothers me, it's the hope!"

This weekend, above all others, is about the passion of football, about forgetting your form in the league and dreaming of just what might be. Take Weekend Breakfast. Phil Williams is one of the presenters, and he's a Villa fan. What would he give for a win at the moment? I'm a suffering Liverpool Red. How much would I love us to turn over United? Oh for another 1-nil like the last time we played them, back in 2006. We went on to win the trophy, with that incredible last minute Steven Gerrard equaliser against West Ham in the final (we went on to win 3-1 on penalties). Ah, those were the days, the 3-3 comeback years...

Whichever team you support, 5 live is with you every step of the way. On the coach heading to the ground, sharing your hopes, watching the game with you, celebrating your win or giving you a shoulder to cry on. That's what we'll be trying to do.

We'll preview all the games in Weekend Breakfast with guests like the Kaiser Chiefs, athlete Mo Farah and a legend of advertising. All I'll say is, "Buy one, you get one free, I say buy one and you get one free"!

Gooner Alan Davies takes over at 9, then it's commentary on 5 live of Arsenal v Leeds and Stevenage v Newcastle, with Millwall v Birmingham and Southampton v Blackpool on 5 live Sports Extra. Then it's your chance to have your say on 606 from 7.20pm.

Oh, and if you want something to take your mind off the football, try the ageless game of "count the cliché" - 1 point for "The Magic of the Cup", 2 for "David v Goliath" and 3 for "potential banana skin".

As much as this is interesting for a large section of 5Live listeners, is there any possibility there could be a meaningful blog on here on which we can make some comments on about the station? It is woeful neglect and disrespectful to loyal listeners who have nowhere to say anything - even the others on the board are unhelpfully closed now.

  • Comment number 2.

God this Alan Davies bloke is tedious. There is absolutely no rapport with the listener. Difficult if not impossible to replace the Candy Man but surely there is someone better than this.

Any chance of an update on Dan? I, along with many others I'm sure, wish him well.

  • Comment number 3.

Good to see the blog back - there were questions about it's demise or not on the 5 Live Facebook page y'day.

I love FA Cup 3rd round Saturday/Weekend and remember the (failed) experiment of a few years back when the 3rd Round games were played in mid-December; it didn't seem right, was unpopular and was reinstated to early January 13 months later.

Adrian Chiles was spot-on with that comment (and I remember him making it on one of the occasions that West Brom were flirting with relegation). ;-)

As a Chelsea supporter and family season-ticket holder of many years, I just wonder what will happen on Sunday (against Ipswich)? Two months ago I would have put my house on Chelsea sailing through to the 4th Round...but on current form...? Still - it's good for the neutrals!

P.S. Happy New Year to all.

  • Comment number 4.

Think Nick Hancock is an excellent stand-in for Colin Murray. Would be good if he could be a permanent fixture!

  • Comment number 5.

Jackstumps - On Monday, I'll find out how Danny's doing, and post an update.

Sarnia - my old boss is a Chelsea fan, and I support Liverpool. We've both decided that it's now cricket season, and we can't discuss football at all at the moment. This weekend could be just what we need, however. In my case, that's unlikely, no matter how optimistic Adrian is.

  • Comment number 6.

I wrote that before I saw today's news. What do people think of Kenny's return?

  • Comment number 7.

For once Carrie i will agree with you, this blog is being neglected, the lack of new blogs lately, maybe indicates an unwillingness by 5live staff to post, this maybe is for various reasons, which we have discussed before.

I would have thought this blog could have been used to discuss which commentary teams are going to be used and some of the logistics behind covering such games.

This blog is nothing but lightweight.

  • Comment number 8.

I almost felt sorry for 'Pool yesterday (which has to be a first). The fans' reaction to KD being appointed was similar to the Toon Army's blind faith in Keegan IMHO.

  • Comment number 9.

@Fedster - that's a good suggestion. I'm sorry that you feel the blog has been neglected - put that down to the Christmas lull (though there were more posts in December than any other month last year). I asked a while back what sort of posts people wanted to see on the 5 live blog. Always open to suggestions.

  • Comment number 10.

    Fef: No 9

Nigel - here are a few suggestions:

A post (or in fact many) that highlight just how unpopular or poor some of your presenters are.

A post (or many ... again) that highlights how little you and the boss listen to the opinions of your listeners.

The one where there is a concertered effort to replace Richard Bacon and Colin Murray which would be greeted with roars of approval and applause from the silent masses.

And the mischevious one from me to kick start this blog into life for 2011!

  • Comment number 11.

Nigel, you have managed to prove the point of many posters on here - you do not read or take on board what they say. Everyone, from every point of view, has given ideas for your blog and they are not considered. There were also suggestions on how to improve access to the blog by flagging it up more successfully than losing it on the bottom of you page.

Please take these things on board. To say Christmas /December blogs were more than usual is slightly misleading when they were about Christmas programmes and Christmas travel, plus Shelagh leaving. Not to forget there was no other blog to write on.

  • Comment number 12.

Nigel you may recall your colleague Roger Mosey a few years back, blogging after everyround of the FA Cup regarding:

. What ties they would be covering and why

. Any consultaion that has taken with Police and others regarding kick of times

. How the ties are covered with rival broadacsters

. Which commentary teams are going to be used

I suggest you look at such blogs, here is 1 example https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/sporteditors/2007/01/fourth_picks.html and do a similar thing for the radio 5 blog before everyone round of the Cup, now that would be exciting unlike this Daily Star Blog Post!!

  • Comment number 13.

Looking further i have found this index, with really intresting blog posts,

How TV covers the Premier League

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/sporteditors/2007/08/how_tv_covers_the_premier_leag_1.html

    This extraordinary FA Cup year

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/sporteditors/2008/03/this_extraordinary_fa_cup_year_1.html

Our England v Germany coverage -

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/sporteditors/2007/08/our_england_v_germany_coverage.html

So Nigel why is it not possible for you to take the first blog i listed and turn it into How Radio covers the Premier League? It would be intresting to compare both blogs, and the others can similary be turned into something about 5live.

Heres a full list for you Nigel!!!

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/sporteditors/match_of_the_day/

  • Comment number 14.

Just to add all those blogs that i have listed, had literally hundreds of comments, when they were first published, but those comments have seem to be deleted, for some bizzare reason!!

  • Comment number 15.

    Well done Fedster.

  • Comment number 16.

Totally agree with Fedster. When Roger Mosey was Director of Sport he showed how blogging should be done. He gave us interesting, (reasonably) frequent posts, and responded to comments too.

  • Comment number 17.

Nigel you have had a few ideas from us, but the question is are you going to turn those ideas into blogs? Or are you going to let this blog die a slow, painful death?

Thanks Carrie getting complimented by you, has really made me feel proud!!!

  • Comment number 18.

    Ref 17:

Wait 'till you get one from me Fed ... you'll think it's your birthday. (Happy New Year by the way!) Any news from Hasit on Danny B?

  • Comment number 19.

Just had a look at the Five Live Facebook site. A first for me. And we get censored on here? That's the place to go for real listener views - Bacon, Savage Derbyshire ... both barrellsk

  • Comment number 20.

Ideally there should be an ongoing message board/blog and phone-in for every 5 Live news/political programme particularly the 3 hr Drive programme in the afternoon.. Unlikely to happen however because what's likely to be written on here will either be too much in stark contrast or too critical over what was broadcast which was why the original message boards were removed in the first place.

  • Comment number 21.

Nigel/Hazit - whoever is listening. If you folks can't be bothered to post new topics can you throw it open to your listeners who appear to be a bit more concerned than you guys. Or am I mistaken .... didn't we have a system like this once before that you took down?

Come on guys, show some interest.

  • Comment number 22.

So there are 4 Premiership fixtures today, but 5live are providing commentary on just 1, i understand that Birmingham City v Aston Villa and Liverpool v Everton are both on talkSPORT but that leaves Sunderland v Newcastle, why cant 5live provide commentary on this?

  • Comment number 23.

Re Jackstumps last: Yes there was a system where listeners/contributors could start the topics on the Messageboards. However this was removed because the real 'thinking' news issues listeners want to discuss don't exactly correlate with what the 'news establishment' (not just 5 Live) want people to discuss.

Look at Tunisia. The political tension there has been brewng up for weeks but there's been little coverage by the UK media because despite the oppresive nature of the country's regime its very much liked by 'neoliberal' governments like ours and the USA. Now of course, the only reason we here about it today is because of UK holidaymakers caught up in the turmoil rather than why the turmoil has started in the first place!

  • Comment number 24.

In addition to Fedster's post about the matches covered, I would be really interested in hearing from the programme makers about how the change in number of commentaries has affected the way the sports programme on a Sunday is put together and how the need for more studio based content is managed. I would also be interested to see whether there has been an effect on listener figures and whether there has been any noticeable decline or whether station loyalty and the regular updates have meant there is little change.

  • Comment number 25.

I am sure Nick knows the real reason why the Station board was closed, but if not,let me explain, the station board was not good value money, it only had 20 or so regular users, most of the comments posted were abusive, and generally cynical.

Why should my money be spent on a messageboard, which is only used by 20 regular users?

In addition to my post 22, its intresting to note that neither SkySports or ESPN,are covering Sunderland v Newcastle live today, so it would be intresting to note why 5live couldnt provide commentary for this game, seeing as neither Absolute Radio or talkSPORT have the rights for this game.

  • Comment number 26.

Fedster: Unequivocol abusive contributions could have quite easily been cut out by the moderators hence encouraging a wider spectrum of contributions. As for 'cynical' that's always an arbitrary word depending on one's viewpoint!

Message boards on all radio stations that cover current affairs are essential these days in order to counter the crap and stage-managed interviews politicians undergo these days. For example one listens or watches Ed Miliband being 'supposedly put through his paces' by the likes of Jeremy Vine, Andrew Marr and today Kate Sylverton on 5 Live it's hard to distinguish between the politician and the journalist because there's so little policy differences that separate the political leaders.

Contributors on these messageboard sites should bare their full name and not hide behind a pseudonym. After all we don't call Cameron and Miliband Bill and Ben!

  • Comment number 27.

All in all yesterday afternoon was a pretty bad advert for THE national broadcaster. Not helped of course by the programme host's continuing inept performances. I was out and about in the car and my colleague said (un-prompted) "I can see why you hate this bloke, he just has no grasp of the subject." I rest my case. Ian Payne where are you?

  • Comment number 28.

Nigel, have you got any answers to the above questions, and when will you publish blogs based around our ideas?

  • Comment number 29.

Nick, what about the fact that the old messageboard was not value for money, and there was only around 20 regular users, how can you possiblly try to justify it being reopened based on these facts?

It was a waste of money, i rather my money went on more worthwile things.

  • Comment number 30.

Had to laugh and agree when I read this review of Vanessa Feltz's new Radio 2 show on the media guardian website:

"...unlike other phone-in shows, she (Feltz) actually appears to care what callers are saying to her, has proper conversations with people and enjoys a rapport with her "lovely listeners" that would be the envy of any broadcaster. It's all a far cry from Five Live, where callers may as well be shouting into a bucket."
