Breakfast live with West Midlands Police

What goes on behind the scenes when one of our main programmes leaves the comfort of its studios? I've worked on thirty or more outside broadcasts - or OBs, as we call them - during my time with 5 live, so I am pretty battle-hardened by now.

My all-time favourite was helping the Simon Mayo show during the Fourth Ashes Test at Trent Bridge in 2005. I particularly enjoyed taking Mark Kermode into the ranks of the Barmy Army and trying to persuade him that cricket could be fun.

The most moving was when Shelagh Fogarty and I spent the morning at the Acorns Childrens Hospice in Worcester. And I had a lot of fun presenting from a Herefordshire pub one Saturday evening last summer.

Tomorrow morning, Shelagh's back on my patch. We'll be spending the morning at the Steelhouse Lane police station in Birmingham city centre. It's an imposing Victorian Gothic building and I'm afraid that if you're ever arrested during a night out in Birmingham, these are the cells where you'll languish.

One 5 live presenter, who shall remain nameless, says he knows a couple of mates who have suffered that very ignominy.

Organising an OB is a mammoth task. First you have to come up with an idea for a programme, and then a location. Lots of issues about policing have been in the news in the past week or so, but when we made the decision to go ahead, we wouldn't have known any of this.

The initial meetings happened last year, and the decision to have the OB was made six months ago. We wanted to wait until after a packed 5 live summer schedule, and West Midlands Police asked us to wait until after the Pope's visit and the Conservative Party Conference, when they were less busy. That why it is only happening now in November.

The Police promised us access all areas and have been as good as their word. As well as ordinary police officers, we will be hearing from the Chief Constable, Chris Sims, who has some tough decisions to make as a result of the Spending Review, with a predicted 2250 job losses, including more than a thousand uniformed officers.

The force has recently been involved in a humiliating climbdown over surveillance cameras in Muslim areas of the city, and after several apologies, I expect them to again say sorry today.

I also asked whether 'access all areas' meant we could see the workings of the Regional Counter Terrorism Unit, and after some more delicate negotiations, I was allowed into its HQ last week.

This is quite a coup for 5 Live, as no journalist has ever been allowed inside one of the country's CTU buildings, nor has anyone been given the kind of access and interviews that I have. I'm still not allowed to reveal its whereabouts, for security reasons. You can hear more about it on Breakfast.

The mechanics of the programme are also interesting. A man called Gary Wisbey gets us on air, by setting up a complex mobile studio. He ensures that the presenter, guests and producers can communicate with each another, and also with Nicky and the team back in London, as well as being on top of what is happening in the news. It's still beyond me how he does it, and I am quite good with the technical kit (I'm especially good at breaking it).

We'll be getting up between 4 and 5am, and we'll be in place shortly after 5.30. Shelagh and Nicky have to run through various scripts and briefs before the start of the programme, and it takes a little bit longer to sort these things out when you are in different cities.

Coffee, tea and pastries are usually brought in by someone, along with the morning newspapers. My job is to bring my expertise and local knowledge about the West Midlands and policing, to try to add some context to some of the stories, and introduce some of the guests to Shelagh and our producers.

It's proper live radio, on location, and it's always worth it once we get on air.

No prizes for guessing who the nameless 5live presenter is - it's obviously Phil Williams who comes from there and won't let us forget it and is always going on about his mates.

Let's hope this will not be politically biased like previous reports and as Greater Manchester police have revealed perhaps you could find out how many staff are in back office roles.

I listened to the representative from the EDL. I didn't like the some of the language - but his basic arguement that 9/11 and 7/7 came first is compelling. It is clear to me that groups like the EDL get their energy from radical Muslim extremism that already exists. It is also obvious there are many Muslims that interpret the Koran literally which is why they want to overthrow western society through violence. It is a strong analogy - but radical Muslims are attacking threatening our society in the way Nazism did. We can either hope we can protect ourselves by appeasement - or we can fight back in a Churchillian way. So far the establishment of which the BBC is clearly part has decided the best way to peace is appeasement. The EDL are arguing appeasement is not working - radical Muslim's are growing in their confidence and becoming more and more effective.

For those who haven't read it, or didn't hear this morning's show, this is the story that Shoulder is referring to:

This is an entirely 5live promulgated story - none of the other media outlets are covering it.

I wanted to ask whether as the muslim on the show claims that the majority of muslims abhor what the extremist groups like Muslims Against Crusades are about, why are there no muslim counter demonstrators opposing the burning flags or poppies?

Also, why is someone who is concerned about radical islamic extremism, anti-semitisim, homophobia, sharia law, halal practices, oppression of women.................considered a right wing nazi? Isn't everyone concerned about this? Is everyone a nazi?

The media love the existence of the EDL as it gives them the opportunity to appease ethnics by condemning EDL supporters with such terms as extreme right wing nazis and to apply a single mindset to a whole group of people. There's usually some exciting footage to cleverly edit from the demonstations with a biased commentary to fit the anti-EDL stance.

If muslims are being radicalised because of the existence of the EDL then someone in their community needs to educate them about what extremism actually means. Maybe they'd wake up to the cancer within their community................or maybe they all think as one as well.

I'm Canadian, I've just read the bbc article concerning the EDL "English Defence League is turning parts of Britain into fertile recruiting ground for Islamic extremists" West Midlands Counter Terrorism

I'm become more baffled shocked and disgusted, with what really looks like this grotesque ironic dizzy disconnect ... possibly hopefully it is the writer that has put his own bent on this ... although not really sure ... seems as though there is an effort with in authority, deliberately trying to polarize people. Really are you surprised there are angry youth taking to the streets ? this is the cause of terrorism ? this is what you have come up with ?! fairly simplistic aint it ? .... what is your view on years of allowing a festering thriving hotbed haven for islamic extremist to set up shop receive tax $ fund raise with impunity, develop plots, receive guidance and from known extremist aboard ? how about years of and countless millions, spent on community cohesion, religious understanding bla bla programs, that have turned out to be promoting extremism, while cutting back on other programs, while the economy go's to hell. How about this mentality "not take sides" while you having kid gloves for islamists screaming for blood of jews and infidels on the street, while you declare that an organization against the undermining of their own country by those who make no secret their contempt for that very country are actually what is behind the growing extremism.... What effect do you think it has on people to know that there is a growing population that follows a ideology and dogma that is fundamentally at odds with the western values, that has consistently sought to assert religion into institution, law, education, consistently pushed to challenge and erode free speech, a free press, the equality of gender, pushed for blasphemy law. The very corner stone of a free democracy Dogma that has fundamental precepts that dictate the dogma is never to be changed, or open to interpretation, resistant to reform, that dictates non muslims are inferior, peace on earth can only, and must come with the dominance of this dogma as tho a command. A culture that is often repressive misogynistic with extreme prejudice and blame against the west and western views. A culture that prefers to be inclusive that views things like marriage to non muslims as forbidden. That at all times works to establish and peruse interests for their own community of muslims brothers and sisters, and the growth of islam, that makes no secret that islam will always come first, it is not a tiny minority. No doubt as it seems my pointing out this reality is considered politically in correct, or as the mainstream media has decided right wing or as often spat racist or nazism .... I'm very liberal left I very much appreciate a multiculturalism. Islam is not a race, Islam and multiculturalism is a contradiction in terms. yes I realize you obviously are not concerned with any of this only with placating those who who threaten.

you should not be surprised there are people taking to the streets. It seems to make more sense that the mentality of a paralyzed politically correct incompetency, unable to distinguish ideology from reality that believes sensitivity trumps pragmatism and truth, that has polarized the country has allowed ... as nurtured the situation to be developed, that has proliferated a growing # of frustrated nationalist movements, created the bnp the edl allowed a tax funded thriving islamic hot bed haven with inevitable threats of mass murder plots, paved the way for hell of next generation that will have to deal with a growing pop that will demand a fundamental apposing ideology be asserted - you should grow a spine and f*#ing take a side

It's no surprise that the BBC, the great defender and promoter of multiculturalism, is going to run with a story which explains why poor innocent Muslims are being radicalised.
