The Big Debate
5 live is in Liverpool for the build up to the Grand National. On Thursday, Colin Murray presented his show from the Radio Merseyside studios, just a few feet from their celebrity guest...Ken Dodd! Colin also had the first British interview with Martina Navratilova - no Merseyside connection, but a brilliant guest and inspiring woman.
On Friday, we hosted a live audience debate with a crowd of more than 300 joining Colin Murray & Mark Pougatch. We talked about the future of Everton and Liverpool FC - is Benitez the right manager to take Liverpool forward? Can Everton seriously crack the top 4? Should the two clubs ever consider sharing a ground?
Jimmy Smallwood from the 5 live Interactive team spoke to 5 live listeners queuing to be in the audience for the 5 live Debate programme. They told him what concerns and fears they have about British football, from the future of Rafa Benitez at Anfield and David Moyes at Goodison to grassroots funding. We've put together this short package to show you what they told us.

Sorry, is this what you mean by "the big debate" of the title? Farcical when you consider that 99% of the country couldn't give a stuff about either Everton or Liverpool or whether they have to play on the same bit of grass or not. I'd think that for the majority, the "great debate" is about whether they will keep their jobs, their houses, have their kids properly educated, their cars not stolen or vandalised and themselves not beaten up on the streets by other, less concientious peoples foul offspring, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.

Much better to hear what the local view in Liverpool is on issues of national importance, especially during an election. Crime, immigration, the economy etc.
Did anyone speak to anyone about anything other then sport while in Liverpool?

The 'establishment' needs football and the petty politics that surround the sport because it detracts from the rotten politics that surround the governence of society.
As long as thousands of (mainly) working class citizens are more concerned about how their beloved footie team is run the less likely are they to challenge the criminally inseign way their economic system is politically managed!
Hence the reason why this is 'The Big Debate'!

You haven't the first idea of my "political orientation." On the other hand, you make no secret of your leanings towards Marx (Marxism in practice having been shown to be an earth-shattering success story, naturally...).
