The rules of chat

Post categories:

You may have seen our latest TV trail for 5 live featuring Gabby Logan, Colin Murray and Richard Bacon. All three have something in common: You will struggle to get a word in with them!

We set them the task of debating the rules of good conversation on the radio.

As you'd expect with these three well-endowed-in-the-chat-department presenters; the rules weren't too serious and we certainly didn't want them to restrict in any way.

They are more of a gentle prod in the right direction. In fact one of the rules was so trivial it was invented by the panel purely to limit Richard's intake of food while on air. Nevertheless, the rules were hotly debated and we expect they will continue to be so.

You can see what Colin, Gabby and Richard thought were the most important rules of chat by clicking below to watch our new set of TV trails.

The trails let you know what to expect from 5 live but they also lay down a challenge to all of our listeners.

What have we missed? What have we got wrong? What are your rules of chat?

Here's a flavour of some of the rules from Colin, Gabby and Richard:

  • Don't use the word literally unless you really mean it.
  • Always be true to yourself when interviewing or being interviewed
  • Only name-drop when that name is relevant to the conversation in hand.
  • You must feel comfortable when you are talking to people - don't wear something to impress that make you conscious of it.
  • Don't text or read when you are in conversation with someone.
  • Don't eat food on air!
  • Any opinion is valid - unless it is factually wrong.
  • When talking to someone famous, it's OK to ask for an autograph.
  • You should not say deliberately controversial things just for the sake of it.
  • You can call Darts a sport.
  • Flirting on air is OK.
  • You can start a conversation about the weather - but only if it is distinctive weather.
  • Treat everyone you talk to as you would like to be treated yourself.
  • Don't use innuendo. Ever.
  • You can speak with any accent you like.

If you have any to add or comment on we want to hear about it. Post yours as a comment below to expand the list of chat rules.

Considering how much of R5's output these three will be covering, I am disappointed to see that it will be 'chat' which implies a light and somewhat 'dumbed down' approach to covering interesting subjects.

Anyway - here's my golden rule:

Try to understand the subject through research where possible or intelligent questioning and never go for a cheap joke which only goes to show an embarrassing lack of more in-depth understanding.

Oh dear. I wholeheartedly agree with propserogirl.

If any confirmation was needed that 5Live is on the fast track to becoming a trivial, lightweight, tabloid news station look no further then The Rules of Chat. The 'talent' chosen to front this 5Live campaign Gabby Logan, Colin Murray and Richard Bacon say it all.

The Rules of interviewing politicians by Logan, Murray, Bacon? Excuse me? What is the 5Live controller thinking?

More dubbing down. How disappointing that incisive interviewing and fast-paced breaking news programmming has been surplanted by superificial pap like this.

The Rules? Don't eat food on air! Flirting on air is OK.

Quit chasing cool. It isn't funny, it isn't relevant and The Rules (like those above) just accelerate the diminishing creadibility of 5Live.

Is anyone at 5Live listening? Time you re-read https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/5live/2009/10/bbc-5-live-schedule-changes.shtml also. Hardly glowing reviews of the changes.

My advice to these three numpties?

    Observe Simon Mayo. Emulate.

Not able to do that? No I didn't think so.

    Give up.

Wow. I had no idea that the rest of the listeners of 5 Live were so serious and dull!

These rules of chat are simply, from what I understand, the unspoken rules all broadcasters have made for themselves and then put onto paper.

This has not affected the credibility of the show, just highlighted the fact that 5 Live is also a place of work - if you can't have fun at work, where can you?

I find no fault with the rules, apart from the one which states Darts is a sport - Come on!!

    Lighten up listeners!

I was going to list all my complaints but I thought ‘’kit. They won’t care’ So I just wrote this instead.

Scene INT. daytime. Adrian van Klaveren’s office.

Aasmah Mir enters. AvK: "Az! Baby. Please take a seat. Thank you soo much for flying down. I owed it to you to say this to your face. Look, you have done wonderful work here … filling in. The thing is … we are going with the ‘Bacon’ thing. I am so sorry honey. For one thing ‘Bacon’ sounds much more wholesome than "Aasmah" - no offence, darling. And Richard will really strengthen the book section. We were really impressed that he has read so widely about mystics, UFOs, all that stuff. It’s really going to cover a key base for us … I am so sorry babe."

PS: Viva average40! Who wrote here: "…Why not give us a 5Live Message Board … Every other Radio station at the Beeb has one…"

It seems to me that whoever makes these appointments "can't be bothered' to monitor the quality of output.

Having had to listen to the inane comments (including innuendoes) perpetrated by ALL 3 of these ego massaging Z listers I can't understand how any of them is even being considered.

Saturday and Sunday mornings are RUINED by the cackling programmes of Murray and Logan.

As for Bacon once his voice breaks and he is capable of asking pertinent questions instead of his usual "Crackerjack, how good am I" childish attitude the better!!

Rules of conversation - When you ask a question please allow the answer to be given WITHOUT INTERRUPTING !!

Ask a question, don't force your views on to the guest by not using the correct "Who, what, when, where and how" words to start the question.

Considering the unemployment throughout the Country there are lots of people who could do the job twice as well, so why not give them a chance, after all WE'RE PAYING THEM THROUGH THE TOO HIGHLY PAID PRODUCERS !!

  • Comment number 7.

    Truly depressing.

3 of the worst presenters ever to take up the mike....either someone has a deep sense of irony or...

I have enjoyed key shows over the last few years on 5live....but Campbell getting his phone in was the thin end of the "rant lite" wedge.

Following him, Derbyshire is barely able to construct a sentence....never mind interview....

Mayo's leaving was awful news....(what a waste of his talent on R2!)...and now, the new line up has guaranteed that I'll be switching off for good...I can just do without lowest common denominator entertainment...life is crass enough as it is....

Well done....systematically purging your station of all talent...takes some doing!

Shame as they're moving to my neck of the woods as well....

  • Comment number 8.

The comments here are very telling. Five Live has had some outstanding presenters over the years - these three are not really in the same league. Simon Mayo's secret is that he presumes that his guests will have something interesting and informative to say and that listeners want to hear from them, not from him. Apart from his support of Spurs (a weakness, to be true), he keeps his prejudices for himself. Richard Bacon will have to change out of all recognition if he is to be a success in the afternoon slot - his evening programme is the work of a self-obsessed and over-opinionated school boy. It was telling in the birthday programme that Chris Evans had to keep reminding him that they were not in 'his house' but 'their house' - Richard Bacon doesn't seem to even recognise the value of his own wife!

  • Comment number 9.

We have Five Live and Five Sport Extra, yet the chance of us getting full commentry on a football match without diverting to other games is rare.

Every now and again, its, 'Corner to X', how the team got it is a mystery. Suddenly after passing to Stuart Hall or whoever, we end up missing a goal.

Don't say you pas to other games when nothing goes on because I know that is not true.

  • Comment number 10.

    My three rules of chat:

Gabby - cut out the inane giggling.

Richard - stop shouting and interrupting.

Colin - start saying "ing" instead of "in". Really annoyin.

  • Comment number 11.

Bit late joining this debate but this seemed the most relevant blog. I listen ( or try ) to listen to Richard Bacon most nights who I used to rate well as a presenter but once again last night it seemed to be a private party with his mates all talking across each other and irritating the hell out of me. Late night broadcasting surely should be more controlled. Last night like most nights they kept going off on childish tangents. A reasonable conversation about the Tiger Woods situation interjected with trivial and banal 'jokes' and for some weird reason worshipping Nick the financial correspondent who as always seemed ill at ease about the childishness of it all. Surely the first rule of broadcasting must be to keep the voices clear and stick to a topic.

  • Comment number 12.

I've watched on in amazement over the past couple of years as Colin Murray has slowly but surely taken over Five Live. Is there any show he doesn't present now? More importantly, as a man who can barely speak English, why in earth is he on the radio in the first place?

The station has gone from an informed, interesting and original station with genuinely engaging presenters, to an inane, lightweight waste of radio airspace. If it wasn't for Danny Baker on Saturday mornings I would abandon the station completely.
