Train service to end? Have your say

The government is ending funding for the rail link between Walsall and Wolverhampton. What do you think about this? Should we be looking at re-opening routes rather than closing them down? Have your say!

A rail link between two West Midlands stations could be axed after the government said it is ending its funding.

The Department for Transport has said the 15-minute long Walsall to Wolverhampton link is "lightly used".

At the end of 2005 the service was given a temporary reprieve and West Midlands transport bosses have estimated that the number of passengers using the line has grown to 60,000 per year.

However, the government has said it is focusing on providing extra capacity on the busiest routes in the region as part of a franchise agreement.

The use and re-development of rail should be supported and encouraged. A great number of people are returning to it in view of the overcrowded roads, but its greatest potential must be to take back the movement of goods.

Travel from the centre of two Black Country towns on a service that takes 14 minutes avoiding one of the busiest junctions on the M6 OR go by by bus on a journey that averages 35 minutes traffic permitting. There is no argument. The only reason is not being used is the frequency of service is too low. It wants to be half hourly at least. But they haven't got the rolling stock and don't want to buy any. So we are stuck with a poor level of service.

Robert Nigel Bench
Another example of contradictory transport policies happens again. We will soon be in gridlock in this country, and yet this rail link is being got rid of just when it is really needed.
