What is a healthy lifestyle?

How to stay in good health

Good health is not just the absence of disease or infirmity, it is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being.

This means eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, avoiding tobacco and drugs, drinking alcohol in moderation and getting plenty of rest.

How does eating a balanced diet impact health?

Eating a balanced diet provides the body with the vital nutrients needed for growth and maintenance.

Here are some key physical benefits:

  • Better energy levels — a good diet filled with fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins gives the body the energy it needs to stay active and alert throughout the day. Think of it like putting the right kind of fuel into a car, it performs better and lasts longer.
  • Healthy weight management — consuming nutritious foods helps maintain a healthy weight. If the right amount and type of food is consumed, it is less likely to result in excess weight, which can lead to other health issues.
  • Stronger immune system — certain foods, such as citrus fruits, berries and nuts, strengthen the immune system, making it less likely for the body to get sick. Imagine the immune system as the body’s defence army, the better it is fed, the more prepared it is to fight off illnesses.
  • Improved bone health — foods rich in calcium (like dairy products, leafy greens and fish) are crucial for strong bones, especially during teenage years when bones are still developing.

What are the emotional benefits of a good diet?

Gatherings involving food are often a social activity and a healthy diet can enhance these experiences:

  • Shared meals —eating healthy meals with family or friends promotes bonding. It’s an opportunity to discuss everyone's day and enjoy quality time together, strengthening relationships.
  • Positive role modelling — when a good diet is maintained, it is easy to inspire others to do the same. This can lead to healthier habits within circles of friends and family.
