What is Hanukkah?
CHEERFUL MUSIC
SAM: Rebecca, why do we play Dreidel at Hannukah?
REBECCA: The four sides of the Dreidel represent different Hebrew letters that stand for “A Great Miracle Happened There.” And Hannukah celebrates a miracle that happened over 2000 years ago in Jerusalem.
SAM: What miracle?
REBECCA: Good question. The King at the time wanted Jewish people to practice the Greek religion instead of the Jewish one. But a small group called the Maccabees miraculously defeated the King’s much larger army.
Afterward, they found the Jewish Temple all smashed up. So they repaired it and dedicated it.
SAM: What does that mean?
REBECCA: It means they made it special for Jewish people again. Hannukah actually means “dedication.”
SAM: Oh. Is that when they lit the lamp?
REBECCA: Exactly! We refer to it as a Menorah.
There was only enough oil for one day but somehow it lasted for 8 days, long enough to make more.
SAM: Oh! Is that the miracle?
REBECCA: It is.
SAM: And is that why Hannukah lasts for 8 days?
REBECCA: Very good! It’s also why we light another candle on the Menorah each night. And it’s why it’s a celebration.
SAM: With presents!
REBECCA: That’s right!
SAM: Should we keep playing Dreidel?
REBECCA: It’s your turn.
SAM: Oh yeah!

What is the story of Hanukkah?

Image caption, A long time ago a Greek Emperor called Antiochus banned the Jews from worshiping God. He put a big statue of himself in their temple and ordered them to bow before it.

Image caption, However, the Jews refused to obey him because the Ten Commandments forbid them to worship anyone other than God.

Image caption, A small group of Jews called the Maccabees fought back against the Emperor's army.

Image caption, After three years, they won the war and recaptured Jerusalem from the Greeks

Image caption, When the Jews went back to their temple, they saw that it had nearly been destroyed.

Image caption, They cleaned and repaired the temple. When they were finished, they rededicated it to God. They did this by lighting the lamp, which was a symbol of God's presence.

Image caption, They only had one small jar of oil which was only enough for one day.

Image caption, However, miraculously the lamp stayed alight for eight days! That is why Jews light a candle every day of Hanukkah.
