In music, we have high pitched notes and low pitched notes - and lots of notes in between. Smaller instruments create high pitched sounds and larger instruments create low pitched sounds.
When Bella is having trouble remembering which size of pot to use, Harry comes up with a helpful suggestion.
Can you think of some high pitched sounds and some low pitched sounds we hear every day?
INTERIOR RESTAURANT KITCHEN - DAY - It's lunchtime at the restaurant and soup's on the menu but Bella is really struggling. A kettle is whistling off-screen, pots are boiling over… Things aren't going well.
BELLA:(panicked) Ah! So many soups! So many sounds! I cannot tell what's boiling over and what's -
She catches a whiff of burning and takes off the saucepan lid, wafting the smell away with a tea towel.
BELLA: …burnt.
Harry runs in to the kitchen, and immediately moves towards the kettle that's still whistling.
HARRY: Chef Bella! You know you have to take the kettle off when it makes that sound!
Harry takes the kettle off the stove and the whilsting sound stops.
BELLA: What sound-a?
Harry puts the kettle back on the stove and the whistling sound starts again.
HARRY: This sound? The high whistling sound?
Bella looks confused and laughs at the idea.
BELLA:(laughing) High?! But Harry it is not up high, it's on the counter!
Harry explains, making his voice high on the word 'high' and low on the word 'low'.
HARRY: Yes, but the noise it's making is a very 'high' noise - you know - the opposite of a 'low' noise?
Bella still looks confused and shakes her head. Harry elaborates, lifting a ladle and a small saucepan.
HARRY: Okay, these saucepans - the little ones make a very 'high' noise.
He demonstrates, tapping the small pot with a ladle, it makes a high metallic ding.
HARRY: And the bigger ones make a 'low' noise.
Harry taps a bigger saucepan with the ladle and it makes a lower pitched ding. The penny slowly starts to drop with Bella.
BELLA: Ahh! Sì, sì! Of course.
Bella lifts a wooden spoon and taps a large black pot. It makes an even lower pitched sound.
BELLA: And this large pot, (tapping the pot) an even lower sound!
HARRY:(smiling) Yes! How are the soups coming?
BELLA: Not good! Everything is either boiling over or burnt! I never know what size of pot to use for which soup-a!
HARRY: Why don't we try our new system? (grabbing his notebook with the orders) Okay, so, we've got 12 portions of carrot and coriander. So that's going to be a lot, Chef Bella!
BELLA: Okay. Okay, one large pot coming right up-a!
Bella hits the spoon off the base of a small saucepan. It makes a high pitched ding.
BELLA: No, no no, no no. (tapping a medium pan) No…
She goes to the largest pan and taps it. It makes the lowest sound.
BELLA:(smiling) Ahh, excellent!
Harry leaves Bella to make the soup. The kettle begins to whistle and before it can boil for too long, Bella shouts.
BELLA:(proudly) Can somebody please take the kettle off! That (singing in a high pitched voice) 'high' pitched noise means it is done! Grazie!
THE END.
