In music, we have notes which can be any length, from very long to very short.
When Bella is cooking pasta, she remembers the different shape names based on their length - one is long and the other is short.
Why not try and make a simple pattern using long and short sounds, just like Harry?
INTERIOR RESTAURANT KITCHEN - DAY - Bella is putting spaghetti in a saucepan. Harry enters, notebook in hand.
HARRY: Order's in chef Bella!
BELLA: Oh great, and what will it be today? Bella's special pasta sauce with spagheeettiii or penne?
As she says the word spaghetti, Bella holds up a piece of dried spaghetti and elongates the word - emphasising how long it is - both the word and the pasta shape. In contrast, she makes the word penne short and clipped, and holds it beside the piece of spaghetti. The two are very clearly different.
HARRY: Why do you say it like that?
BELLA: Like what? Like this? Mmmmmmmm and mmm?
Bella repeats spaghetti and penne, holding up the relevant pasta shape as she does so - but this time hums the words, joining the syllables - making spaghetti one long note and penne one short note.
HARRY:(laughing) Yes!
BELLA: Well, I've never really thought about it, but I guess it's because one is looonnng and the other is short!
Again, as Bella says long, she holds up the piece of spaghetti and as she says short, the penne shape. Harry slowly comes to a realisation…
HARRY: So, if I were to say… Mmmmmmmm?
Harry gestures a long piece of spaghetti in mid-air as he hums.
BELLA: Well that is looonnng… So - spagheeettiii!
HARRY: And mmm?
Harry makes his humming clipped and gestures a small piece of penne as he does so.
BELLA: Well that is short, so Penne!
HARRY: What a neat way to remember! But… if I were to say… Mmmmmmmm - mmm - mmmmmmmm?
BELLA:(flustered) Harry! Harry, no, no, no, no! You cannot mix spaghetti and a-penne you silly man!
HARRY:(laughing) Well, the main thing is it's all delicious!
BELLA:(smiling) That is true, yes!
THE END.
