Line

Description

Understand how the weight, thickness and orientation of lines can create the illusion of form within an artwork. A descriptive cross-hatching technique creates tone and shape in Albrecht Durer’s illustration ‘Praying Hands’. White lines are used to create highlights and black lines to create shadow. Edgar Degas used weight of line in his pastel drawing ‘Dancer Standing in Profile’ to imply the movement of a ballet dancer. Expressive lines are seen in Paul Cezanne’s ‘Millstone in the Park of the Chateau Noir’. Acute angles and diagonal lines create a sense of unease and energy in the painting. Keywords: Contour line, Descriptive line, Expressive line
