Melanie Dyson is Emma’s mother. She surprises Dante by announcing he is the father. Melanie symbolises many of the problems faced by young or single parents: her mother forced her out of the house, causing Melanie to drop out of education and move in temporarily with her aunt.
When we meet Melanie, she is "panicky", "older", "sadder" and smokes around the baby. Melanie has had to leave her aunt’s house and is moving "up north". It is implied that she is suffering from depression, as she tells Dante "the thoughts in my head scare me".
Wanting the best for Emma, she leaves her with Dante, telling him "Emma deserves to be with someone who can look after her properly". Once Dante has bonded with Emma, he fears Melanie coming to take her back.
Question

Pregnancy has ruined Melanie’s relationship with her mother, who made her move out.
Melanie relies on others for financial support. Since she can no longer live with her aunt, she is having to move in with friends in a different city.
Melanie could not continue her education and had to look after Emma instead of studying for her A-levels.
Looking after a baby as a single parent can be very challenging. Melanie says "I gave up my life, my friends, my dreams for Emma".
Aunt Jackie

Aunt Jackie helps other characters grow. She encourages Dante to talk openly with his father, telling him "you are so like your dad". Similarly she criticises Tyler for not showing Dante he loves him or acknowledging that Adam is gay.
Much like Emma, Aunt Jackie is a catalyst for change in the characters’ lives and becomes a positive part of the Bridgeman family.

After they break up, Josh assaults Adam by beating him very badly, resulting in Adam being hospitalised. Dante hunts Josh down and begins to strangle him in revenge.
