University choices
You are researching universities in France and come across an article in which two students in terminale (Year 14) describe their intentions.
Choisir une carrière, ce n’est pas facile. Je voulais être médecin mais j’ai fait des recherches et les études sont trop longues. C’est un emploi bien rémunéré, bien sûr, mais je serais obligé de faire de grands sacrifices et de demander à mes parents d’en faire aussi. Ils ont fait la même chose avec leurs parents quand ils étudiaient, mais je ne veux pas leur demander de faire ça pour moi. Alors, ce qui m’intéresse maintenant, c’est l’informatique. Je voudrais faire un apprentissage pour devenir technicien informatique parce qu’on peut gagner de l’argent en même temps que de suivre une formation.

Je trouverai un emploi à mi-temps pour pouvoir payer le loyer puisque je vais étudier à Lille, loin de chez moi. Je travaillerai comme serveuse ou guide touristique, je ferai ce qu’il faudra faire pour gagner de l’argent. Mes parents, eux, ne sont pas allés à la fac, mon oncle non plus. Ils m’encouragent tous mais ils n’ont pas les moyens de me soutenir financièrement.

Choosing a career is not easy. I wanted to be a doctor but I did some research and I would have to study for too long. It's a well-paid job, of course, but I’d need to make some big sacrifices and ask my parents to do that too. They did the same thing with their parents when they were studying, but I don’t want to ask them to do that for me. What interests me now is computer science. I would like to do an apprenticeship to become an IT technician because you can earn at the same time as training.

For me, going to college is a big goal. I would like to become an accountant and, to succeed in this field you have to have a degree. My parents didn’t go to university, nor did my uncle. They all encourage me, but they can’t afford to support me financially.
