Social media use may also turn into an addiction. People can get so hooked that they stop engaging with others and spend large amounts of time alone in their digital world.

There has been much research carried out but no definitive answer to the actual scale of the problem. However, research carried out by Social Media Today (2015) suggests:

  • 28 per cent of iPhone users check social media before getting out of bed in the morning
  • teenagers aged 15 to 19 spend at least three hours a day looking at their social media
