Transformations – WJECCongruent shapes

In this GCSE Mathletics study guide, we'll go through what happens when shapes are reflected, as well as the different centres of rotation and enlargement and congruent shapes. Transformations change the size or position of shapes. Congruent shapes are identical. Scale factors calculate area and volume of similar shapes.

Part ofMathsGeometry and Measure

Congruent shapes

2 shapes that are the same size and the same shape are congruent.

Eight similar shapes labelled A - H, 4 of which are congruent, ie they are identical in size and shape

Shapes A, B, E and G are congruent. They are identical in size and shape.

Congruent triangles

For 2 triangles to be congruent, 1 of 4 criteria need to be met.

The 3 sides are equal (SSS: side, side, side)

Two triangles where three sides are equal (SSS: side, side, side)

2 angles are the same and a is the same (ASA: angle, side, angle)

Two triangles where two angles are the same and a corresponding side is the same (ASA: angle, side, angle)

2 sides are equal and the angle between the 2 sides is equal (SAS: side, angle, side)

Two triangles where two sides are equal and the angle between the two sides is equal (SAS: side, angle, side)

A right angle, the and a corresponding side are equal (RHS: right angle, hypotenuse, side)

Two triangles where a right angle, the hypotenuse and a corresponding side are equal (RHS, right angle, hypotenuse, side)

Example one

State whether the 2 triangles are congruent. Give a reason to support your answer.

Two SSS triangles with sides equal to 5.5 cm, 4 cm, 3 cm

Yes - SSS, the 3 sides are equal.

Example two

State whether the 2 triangles are congruent. Give a reason to support your answer.

Two RHS isoceles triangles, one with with sides equal to 5.8 cm and 3 cm, the other with sides equal to 58 mm and 30 mm

Yes - RHS.

Question

State whether the 2 triangles are congruent. Give a reason to support your answer.

Two triangles, one has internal angles of 60 and 40 degrees and a side = 7 cm between the angles, the other has internal angles of 60 and 40 degrees but with a side = 7 cm next to the 60 degree angle
