You will find the hospitality industry almost everywhere you go in the world and it employs a huge number of people.

The quality of the products and services provided can have a positive or negative affect on other industries. All of these industries are interdependent on each other.

The travel industry

Think about when you go on a journey by road. If you travel on the motorway you may stop at motorway services for a coffee or snack or even a meal for lunch or in the evening. These services provide a whole range of outlets to choose from.

There are also mobile outlets along major roads to provide food and beverages for people like long distance lorry drivers and travellers in need of refreshments.

Travelling by train you can buy food and drink at the station and if you are travelling long distances there may be a buffet service on board the train.

Travelling by plane you will be able to select from a whole range of different types of outlets in the airport. There are also special lounges that you can pay to use where food and drink are provided including breakfast, lunch and dinner, hot and cold drinks and alcoholic beverages.

Travelling by ferry you can buy food and drinks in the terminal building and also on board the vessel.

The tourism industry

Belfast has become a major player in the tourism industry so it is vitally important that when visitors come they have a good experience.

Outlets where they stay, like hotels or bed and breakfasts, must be welcoming, provide good food, accommodation and service to encourage them to come back or tell others to come.

The type of experience the guests have can positively or negatively affect the tourism industry.

As well as families enjoying holidays, older people are enjoying good health for longer and have money to spend in the tourism and hospitality industries.

Both benefit from catering for this section of the population, for example all-inclusive coach tours and week-end breaks.
