Question paper one: Human environments

You need to demonstrate your understanding, and be able to give examples, of the following:

Population

The methods of data collection: this refers to a census but also others methods such as Civil Registration and household surveys.

The problems of data collection, such as the difficulties faced in developing countries of collecting reliable data.

The consequences of population structure. You will need to be able to interpret population pyramids and explain projected changes in future population structures, e.g. ageing populations in countries such as the UK.

The causes of forced and voluntary migration. You should be able to explain push and pull factors, which lead to both forced and voluntary migration flows.

The impacts of forced and voluntary migration. You need to be able to give the positive and negative impacts on both the donor and receiving countries.

Rural

You should be able to explain a range of social, economic and environmental impacts of rural land degradation in a rainforestorsemi-arid area.

You should also be able to explain and evaluate the effectiveness of a range of management strategies occurring within rainforestorsemi-arid areas.

Rural land use conflicts (e.g. footpath erosion) related to either a glaciated or a coastal landscape.

The management of rural land use conflicts (e.g. resurfacing footpaths) related to either a glaciated or coastal landscape.

You need to be able to explain a range of strategies used to manage these conflicts and comment on their success.

Remember: you only need to learn one case study, such as the Cairngorms or Dorset coast. You do not need to study both areas.
