The application of Geographical Skills

This section of Question Paper Two contains an extended response question that requires you to apply your geographical knowledge and skills to a scenario-type question.

You should also be able to analyse, interpret and synthesise data from a range of different sources such as maps, tables and graphs.

You must make use of every source/diagram/map provided in the question to ensure you score a high mark.

Map Skills

You need to be able to:

  • use four and six figure grid references – always give grid references or named examples when answering OS map questions
  • identify and locate physical and human features – such as rivers or industry
  • measure distance using a ruler and use the scale line to calculate the real distance
  • give detailed descriptions of relief, drainage, and contour patterns
  • describe and suggest reasons for sites of new developments – such as by-pass roads, business parks, or airports
  • describe and explain land use – such as forestry, farming, recreation/tourism
  • suggest reasons for possible land-use conflicts
  • explain both positive and negative impacts of new developments on an area selected
  • use an OS map in association with photographs, field sketches, and cross sections/transects

Interpretation of Data/Graph Skills

You need to be able to analyse and interpret numerical and graphical information which may be presented in the following ways:

  • statistical information – such as maps showing data
  • graphical information – such as line, bar, pie, or scatter graphs
  • tabular information – such as a table or matrix
