2-dimensional shapes - EduqasArea of trapeziums

2-dimensional shapes are flat. The perimeter of a 2D shape is the total distance around the outside of the shape. The area of a 2D shape is the space inside the shape.

Area of trapeziums

The area of a can be calculated using the formula:

Trapezium with height (h), top length (a) and base (b) labelled

\(\text{area of a trapezium} = \frac{1}{2}(a + b) \times h\)

Example

Calculate the area of the trapezium:

Trapezium with height (5cm), top height (4cm) and base (10cm) labelled

area = \(\frac{1}{2}(4 + 10) \times 5 = 35~\text{cm}^2\)
