The independent model
Hollywood studios can afford to finance and distribute their own films but independent film companies and producers often struggle to raise budgets for their films.
Independent companies may also struggle to get their films distributed.
Studio films can be distributed by the studios’ own distribution divisions but independent films usually have to be sold to small non-studio distribution companies in order to get released.
Independent films may play in cinemas if they attract a distributor but they will usually play on fewer screens than major studio releases.

Brooklyn (2015) is an example of a film produced by a group of independent film companies.
However, because they typically cost much less than studio films, a successful independent movie can generate a profit with fewer sales.
Independent films also rely heavily on DVD and Blu-Ray sales as well as sales to broadcasters and streaming services.
Some independent films, especially in genres such as horror and action, are produced solely for non-theatrical markets such as streaming services and DVD.
