What is a Just War?
Sikhism allows Just WarA war fought on certain philosophical and religious principles., which must be fought honorably. It would be unusual for a Sikh to be a pacifistSomeone who is completely opposed to any kind of violence and will not participate in any aspect of war. because it is expected that military action may need to be taken against oppressionExercise of authority or power in an unjust manner., when all other means have failed. It is an expression of the teaching of Miri-PiriThe concept of the importance of material as well as spiritual power, started by Guru Hargobind, and represented by the two swords of Miri and Piri., which is about our capacity for freedom in order to flourish.
Dharam yudh
Dharam yudh is the Sikh term for a Just War, ie one that is entered into after all peaceful attempts at righting a wrong have failed. Sikhs generally believe it is right to fight in cases of self-defence or for a righteous cause. They may fight for injustice but never for revenge.
The following rules were applied in the battles fought by Guru Gobind SinghGuru Gobind Singh was the tenth and final Sikh Guru. He established the Khalsa and completed the Guru Granth Sahib, the most important Sikh holy book. and are therefore followed by Sikhs:
- war must be a last resort
- never strike first
- use proportionate force
Defence
Sikhs must never be the first to draw their swords. They must remain saints while being soldiers. Therefore, Sikhs must apply their social and political beliefs such as defending the weak and promoting the cause of liberty, highlighted in the Dasam GranthThe Dasam Granth is a collection of various manuscripts, including compositions by Guru Gobind Singh.:
When all peaceful methods have failed to bring justice, it is righteous to draw the sword.
Equality and respect
Equality and religious freedomAcceptance of all religions to worship and practise freely. are of great importance to Sikhism. Reckless and hasty fighting is not acceptable. non-combatantA person who is not engaged in fighting during a war, especially a civilian, army chaplain, or army doctor. are to be protected. Sikhs are expected to fight for human rights and are prepared to strike to promote harmony between religions.
