A French language assistant, Sylvie has been working in a Scottish school and has been researching teenage issues. She interviews a student about her image of herself.

Pas vraiment. Je pense que je suis plutôt consciente de mon apparence, mais d’une bonne façon. En général, je porte ce que je veux, et principalement des vêtements confortables. Souvent c’est à la mode, mais je n’achète jamais de grandes marques car c’est trop cher. Quand j’étais plus jeune j’aimais bien me teindre les cheveux chaque mois une couleur différente! Ceci a choqué mes parents, spécialement quand c’était rose.

In her opinion, is she concerned by her image? Justify your response.
No. She is aware of it but in a good way. She wears what she wants. She chooses comfortable clothes and is not too bothered about them being fashionable. She never buys designer/branded clothes so doesn’t spend a lot of money.

What did she used to do when she was younger and how did her parents feel about it?
The answer is she used to dye her hair a different colour every month. Her parents were shocked.

Are you concerned about your image?
Not really. I think that I am simply aware of my appearance in a good way. Genreally I wear what I want, mainly comfortable clothes. Often it’s fashionable, but I never buy branded/designer clothes because it’s too expensive. When I was younger I liked to dye my hair different colours each month. This shocked my parents, particularlly when it was pink !
