A French language assistant, Sylvie has been working in a Scottish school and has been researching teenage issues. She interviews a student about how much young people think about their image.

Il me semble que beaucoup de jeunes se préoccupent de leur image. Les filles sont particulièrement influencées par les images des top model dans les magazines ou par les célébrités dans les films qui sont très maigres et bien coiffées. Certains jeunes sont tellement concernés par leur image qu’ils font du bronzage artificiel, portent trop de maquillage et utilisent les lisseurs à cheveux tous les jours. De plus en plus de jeunes se font percer partout ou même se font tatouer. J’ai horreur de ça.

It seems to me that lots of young people are concerned about their image. Girls are particularly influenced by the images of models in magazines or by celebrities in films who are very thin and who have their hair styled. Some young people are so concerned by their image that they get fake tans, wear too much make-up and use haïr straighteners every day. More and more young people get their bodies pierced or even get a tattoo. I hate this.
