Self-reflection
You have to self-reflect on the decisions you make throughout the Composing Assignment.
Self-reflection is important and gives you the chance to think about:
- what you have done
- how you have done it
- what decisions you have made
It gives you the chance to think carefully about the quality of the work that you have produced and allows you to devise targets and next steps for further learning.
Your reflections should consist of comments relating to the musical features and creative choices you made when creating your original music. Comments should not relate to the experience of having done the task itself.
Here are examples of the type of questions you should ask yourself:
- What influenced your choice of musical style?
- What is your favourite piece of music/composer/band?
- Why did you choose the concepts contained in your work?
- Have you recently played a piece containing some of the concepts?
- Which parts of your composition/improvisation/arrangement were successful?
- Is your introduction particularly exciting?
- Have you used interesting chords in your introduction?
- Would you change anything in your piece and if so, why?
- If you were to write the song again, would you want to add backing vocals?
- How well does your music realise your creative intentions for the piece?
- Did your choice of instruments/key convey the mood you were aiming to create?
- Will you explore anything from this piece of work in any more detail (styles, rhythm, melody, harmony, instruments, timbre, dynamics)?
- In your next piece, will you explore dynamics and timbre in more detail?
