Paper 1 - Directed writing
Writing in French
(20 marks)
In the Directed writing you must write an essay of around 150-180 words in French.
The subject should be chosen from one of the two options given. Each option is on a different context that has not been covered in the Reading or Listening parts of the exam.
Each option gives six bullet points which you must address as fully as possible. The first bullet point has two parts that must be included. The remaining bullet points have one part.
It's a good idea to space out your six bullet points in your prelim or exam. This helps you and the person marking your paper to check that you have dealt with each one.
The bullet points are likely to change year on year but some of the types of things you might be asked to write about are past trip/holiday/excursion/work experience to a French speaking destination. The bullet points will ask for information such as:
- who you went with
- how you travelled there
- what you thought of the area
- the job you did
- how you found the people, the work place, or even the food
You could be asked to write about an event which took place when you were there such as:
- a music concert
- what you did for work experience
- a trip out with the family/people you were staying with/what you did when you had free time
You might also be asked to compare things related to this trip with your experiences back in Scotland.
For a conclusion you could be asked to explain:
- in what way this trip has been good for you
- if you would recommend a similar trip to other people who are also studying French.
