Instant messaging known as IM, is a form of real-time text communication that people use when exchanging messages online.

Messages are sent and received almost instantly. Instant messaging is frequently used in the workplace and in some educational environments, for faster and more efficient communications.

Advantages of instant messaging

  • It allows group chats and sharing of resources, so that multiple people can communicate on one topic.
  • Quick updates are provided to the users.
  • Presence indicators show if someone is available or unavailable.
  • It can be accessed on different types of devices.

Disadvantages of instant messaging

  • It doesn’t allow for easy record–keeping. You can’t go back easily to find or keep a proper record of what has been said in messages.
  • It requires internet access.
  • It can be a distraction if over-used.
  • Messages can be misunderstood without background detail, due to the short format of instant messaging.
