Developing approaches within a personal development plan Emotional factors
Different approaches can be used to develop mental, emotional, social and physical factors which impact performance. It is important to consider approaches when designing a personal development plan.
Approaches to develop emotional factors include visualisation and progressive muscular relaxation.
Visualisation
Visualisation involves working through images in your mind on how performance should be completed.
Visualisation can be used to allow the performer to reduce their anxiety levels either before, during or after performance. The performer needs to visualise how they can have a successful outcome to a particular area of their performance.
Progressive muscular relaxation
Progressive muscular relaxation (PMR) involves relaxing each muscle through stages.
PMR allows the performer to relax their muscles prior to a stressful performance. The relaxation of the muscles in turn allows the performer to reduce their cognitive anxiety. The performer may start at the top of the body, tensing and relaxing their muscles and continuing this progress down throughout their body.
