Throwing the ball in goalball

Throwing the ball is the attacking shot taken by the offensive team to score a point.

Stage one

  • On the balls of your feet, hold the ball in one hand ensuring that the fingers are spread and support the ball with the other hand.
  • Draw the ball backwards (releasing supporting hand) and extend the arm to a distance that maintains control of the ball.
  • Step forward with the opposite leg to your throwing arm and keep both feet pointing in the direction of the throw.

Stage two

  • As you step, swing the ball forwards very quickly and release it close to the floor so that it makes very little sound.
  • As you are throwing the ball, ensure your other arm is extended outwards to help balance.
  • Follow through with the throwing arm in the direction that you wish the ball to travel.
  • Ensure that the knees are slightly bent to cushion impact.
