Performing and composing ideas
There are techniques for composing and performance in Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods that are usual in a popular music genre, but also could transferable to other music genres.
| In performance | In composing | |
| Syncopation | It is helpful to subdivide each bar of music to effectively perform syncopation | Syncopation can give a jaunty or laid-back style depending on the mood of the piece |
| Call and response | Understand that the response is an echo of the call, or a more definite and forceful response | Call and response can help build excitement, and give energy to a piece of music |
| Improvised solo | The improvising performer must know the underlying chords to be able to choose suitable notes | Improvisation, or improvised-sounding passages, can lend a composition to sound more in the moment |
| Monophonic texture | A performer should understand the reason for the monophonic texture and alter their style of playing accordingly | Monophonic texture can bring focus and attention to a specific and important part of the music |
| Cross-rhythms | To perform a conflicting rhythm it is important to subdivide the beat accurately | Cross- rhythms are an excellent way to produce exciting compositions |
