Media typesGraphics and Video

Information systems need to be interactive and interesting. A way of doing this is to include different media types. Media will increase the memory requirements and compression is used to reduce this.

Pie charts can quickly represent detailed figures

Graphics include charts and tables, as well as images. Graphics allow users to quickly comprehend complex information. For example a pie chart allows a quick comparison of how an amount is divided up.

  • Graphics can very quickly visualise large volumes of information that would require lengthy text.
  • Graphic images can be used as a page header or to replace text links to make pages more attractive in layout.
  • Images with descriptive text are much more interesting than text alone. They break up pages much more.

Video

Video is very useful on websites as videos can give lots more information on a subject than just images or text.

  • Videos can feature experts talking about a subject, rather than just text that users must read. Some people will find this more involving and easier to take in.
  • Videos are more interactive than simple text and can also be used to break up text.
  • Video tutorials could be included in a help section to help new users, or to explain step-by-step instructions.
  • However videos can take a long time to load on the page or increase the memory requirements of an information system.
