Mary's marriage to Darnley

Mary and Lord Darnley met in February 1565 at Wemyss Castle in Fife and were married at Holyrood Palace in July 1565.

The marriage was to cause divisions amongst the Lords.

Elizabeth was against the marriage and persuaded some Scottish nobels to rebel in March 1565. On 14th August, Mary seized the lands of the rebel Lords, who had built up support near Ayr.

The Chaseabout Raid 1565

With strong support and an army of 5000 men, Mary left Glasgow determined to pursue the rebels.

The rebel Lords asked Elizabeth for help but she refused.

A number of nobles fled to England and Mary lost the support of strong and powerful men.

Mary’s victory proved to be a damaging blow to the Protestants.
