Effective time management techniques
Prioritising
This means deciding which is an urgent taskA task that demands immediate attention and that has a specific deadline. It is largely driven by external factors. and which is an important taskA task that does not have a deadline attached to it, but which needs attention as it can impact on others. An important task does not necessarily need immediate attention.. It is a good idea to list the tasks in order of priority as more time can then be devoted to the important and urgent tasks instead of the natural tendency to concentrate on straightforward tasks.
Organising
A useful technique in managing time is to use a time log. This is a chart divided into 30 minute intervals. The idea is to fill in exactly how your day was spent from the time you get up to the time you go to bed.
This will enable you to identify busy times, quiet times and when time could be used more productively.
List making
By carrying a pen and notebook or an electronic equivalent, a to do list can be created and monitored. The list should also highlight the important tasks as well as record deadlines and any other relevant information.
Persevering
When things are not working out, and there seems too little time to get everything done, don’t panic.
Persevering means learning to take a positive attitude towards frustration and failure. Being assertive can also help. If you are working as part of a team, you may need to delegateAssigning responsibility and authority to someone to complete a task, while the ultimate responsibility for success lies with the person that delegated. more or ask for more commitment to the group’s goal.
