Nazi beliefs were enforced on the German population at a great cost to personal freedom. The Nazis used a combination of terror and intimidation to control the German people. Germany was a police state, controlled by the SS and the Gestapo.

The legal system was under Nazi control and courts had to adopt the new ideals of National Socialism. Propaganda and indoctrination was used to brainwash people into accepting and believing Nazi beliefs, ideas and values.

The Ministry for Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda was set up under Joseph Goebbels and forms of media were censored.
