Key themes

  • Hitler as Chancellor
  • The Reichstag Fire
  • The 1933 election and Enabling Act
  • Trade unions and political parties
  • Night of the Long Knives
  • Hitler becomes Führer

Between 1933 and 1934, Hitler quickly turned Germany into a one-party state and a dictatorship. By the end of August 1934, Adolf Hitler had created a totalitarian regime under which the Nazi Party ruled for 12 years.

He was able to eliminate firstly political opposition from other parties, trade unions and ultimately opposition from within his own party. Freedom of speech and civil liberties disappeared and a police state was created.
