Area of parallelograms

Explore updated revision resources for GCSE Maths: Area of parallelograms, with step-by-step slideshows, quizzes, practice exam questions, and more!

The area of a can be calculated using the following formula.

Parallelogram with height (h) and width (w) labelled

Remember, the height must be the perpendicular height, measured across the shape.

Example

Calculate the area of the parallelogram.

Parallelogram with height (6cm) and width (9cm) labelled

Area = \(9 \times 6 = 54~\text{cm}^2\)

The formula for the area of a parallelogram can be used to find a missing length.

Question

Calculate the width of the base of the parallelogram:

Parallelogram with height labelled and area stated
