Create
Make an animal vase
Spring is a time when lots of colourful flowers begin to bloom. Watch the video below with Sophie Prescott-Crees from Parents' Toolkit about creating a funky animal vase.
Hey! I'm Sophie and in this creative video I'm going to share with you a great craft project idea that you can do together with your little ones at home.
This project gives children the chance to explore their creativity whilst learning the importance of recycling materials to make something new. The steps are really easy to follow but there will be moments that your child will need some help from you.
So grab your scissors and a plastic bottle. It's time to get crafting!
You will need a plastic bottle, a felt tip pen, paint and paint brushes, a black marker pen or black paint, scissors, a pencil and optional extras to decorate your vases.
You could use yarn, card, glitter and glue.
Step 1: Using a felt tip pen, ask your child to draw out on the bottle the shape they would like for their vase.
(Step 2): This next step will need to be carried out by a parent or guardian. Carefully cut the shape out of the bottle with scissors and round off any sharp edges.
Step 3: Using a paint colour of your choice, paint the vase and leave to dry.
Step 4: Using a black marker or black paint, now add the face. You can leave the vase there, but for this video we are taking it one step further and making a unicorn.
Step 5: Cut strands of coloured yarn and glue onto the inside top rim of the vase.
Step 6: To make the unicorn horn, take a small square of yellow card and roll from corner to corner. Secure the end with glue.
Step 7: Now cover the horn in glitter.
Now help your child glue the horn onto the bottle and yarn.
Once everyone is happy with the way the vase looks, now help your child to fill the vase with soil and seeds so they can grow their own plant.
These vases can be made from a variety of materials, from plastic bottles to juice cartons to cat litter boxes.
For any cardboard containers make sure you line them with a plastic bin bag to stop them from getting wet.
And there you have it, you can watch the plants bloom in the cute handmade vases you made together.

Challenge: Magical woodland story

Spring is an amazing season. It gets warmer, sunnier and different types of plants and flowers begin to grow.
We also also see many more animals appear during spring.
Write an adventure or fantasy story set in a magical spring woodland.
Story starter:
The magic has been lost from the woodland. The beings that live there need to find it and get it back!
Use the image below as inspiration.
Think about:
- What does the woodlands look like this time of year? What spring flowers can you see?
- Who are your characters?
Are they mythical creatures like fairies, pixies and trolls?
