Patrick went over to the mattress, hoping against hope that the voice had been wrong. Of course it hadn't, and the gun was indeed there. His heart sank.
David was pounding on the door once more, and Patrick could see the hinges working loose. He didn't have much time. He took the revolver, released the safety catch and turned towards the door. At that moment it gave way, and David was hurtling towards him. Instinctively, Patrick squeezed the trigger and... nothing happened.
Before he knew it, Patrick had been knocked to the ground. David had him pinned to the floor, and he was feeling far too weak to struggle. Slow, deliberate footsteps approached them from the shattered doorway, and he heard a familiar voice: "Well done, Patrick." It was the voice from the telephone. "I think the operation has been a success. I'm Dr Janssen, by the way."
