Patrick looked around for some means of escape. He had no idea what was happening, but he did not want to be found with blood on him; blood that did not seem to be his. Unfortunately, there was nowhere to run: there was only one door and the window had security bars to keep burglars out and guests who had not paid in.
The knocking came again. “Patrick! Don’t be such a bloody fool. It’s me; David.”
David. He knew the name, but he could not place it.
“Come on, Patrick; I’m in as much of a state as you. I can’t stand around out here.”
Patrick moved slowly towards the door, but the scratches on the desk caught his eye. Etched larger and deeper than any other mark was one word: DON’T.
Patrick felt a chill along his spine. Somehow he knew that word was meant to warn him.
