“Now Nana-ji has moved back to the Silver Street area it means that I get to see a lot more of the family. It’s always good to see him. I am one of the partners of a dentist practice nearby and I'm really enjoying it. Mum and Nana-ji are always saying how proud they are of me. It does get embarrassing and I don’t want to be seen as the ‘Golden Boy’ of the family. Dad used to be the same but I prefer not to see him anymore.
Growing up, I always had an inkling that there was something wrong between Mum and Dad. Danyal and I never really knew why they divorced but when we found out that he used to abuse her, both physically and psychologically, all hell broke loose... Nana-ji blamed himself. Mum regretted telling us in the first place, and then Danyal told Dad that he was gay. I’ve tried my best to be there for all of them but I know they all need their own space and time.
I love Mum and finding out what she went through cut me up inside. I won’t ever let her go through anything like that again. She has sacrificed a lot for me and Danyal. If anything positive has come out of this whole ordeal it’s brought us closer as a family. We all have to look out for each other”.
