War Walks - Dunkirk

Richard Holmes reports on the unforgettable evacuation of thousands of soldiers from Dunkirk, visiting the scene and talking with some of those who were there. These include Christopher Dreyer, who commanded Motor Torpedo Boat 102, which made several trips to rescue troops.

To recreate their journey, Holmes goes aboard this and other vessels, including Sundowner, the boat that belonged to Charles Lightoller, who had been the second officer of RMS Titanic. Holmes explains how Lightoller rescued more than 100 men and avoided attack from German dive bombers. The secret location from which the operation was conducted is also revealed, along with the places around Dunkirk where some British troops suffered at the hands of the advancing German forces.
