Football Legends - Stanley Matthews
Jimmy Armfield's series of interviews with legendary footballers begins with Sir Stanley Matthews, the most highly regarded of all players of the beautiful game. This programme includes contributions from fellow players and managers, including Walter Winterbottom, Tom Finney and Hugh Kelly, plus comedian Charlie Chester, a friend of Matthews.
Sir Stanley Matthews played for Stoke City and Blackpool and his 23-year stint on the national team remains the longest of any England player. Despite appearing in more than 700 league games, he was never booked. Like Matthews, interviewer Jimmy Armfield played for Blackpool. The south stand at Bloomfield Road is named after Armfield; Matthews gave his name to the west stand. Sports commentary removed for copyright reasons.
