Football Legends - Jack Charlton
Jack Charlton played centre-half for Leeds United for over 20 years and was part of England's victorious World Cup team in 1966. He later became manager of Middlesbrough, Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle United and, for almost a decade, the national team of the Republic of Ireland.
In this interview with Jimmy Armfield, Charlton talks about his early days working at a coal mine, the start of his football career and the World Cup match that made the entire squad the stuff of legend. In 1996, the year after he resigned as manager of the Republic of Ireland team, Jack Charlton was awarded honorary Irish citizenship. A life-size statue of him can be found at Cork Airport. He is depicted wearing fishing gear and holding an impressive salmon.
