Football Legends - George Hardwick
One of the most versatile players in English football history, 'Gentleman' George Hardwick was captain of both Middlesbrough and England and led a post-war combined Great Britain team to victory against a Rest of Europe side in 1947. He was player-manager at Oldham Athletic and manager of Sunderland AFC and Gateshead.
In this programme, Hardwick looks back at his career, recalling his achievements both on and off the pitch. He also explains the thinking behind his famous moustache.
George Hardwick died after a lengthy illness on 19 April 2004, aged 84. His widow, Jennifer, set up the George Hardwick Foundation to provide advice and support for unpaid carers of sick, frail or disabled family members, friends or partners.
