Churchill, The Man I Knew
This programme was produced by the World Service to commemorate the centenary of Churchill's birth. Interviews from a variety of sources reveal Churchill's complex and fascinating nature. Contributors include Anthony Eden, Lord Boothby, Lady Astor and the painter Paul Maze, Churchill's friend, who describes him as a "true artist".
Paul Maze was born in Normandy in 1887. He served with both the British and French armies during World War One and met Winston Churchill in the trenches. They became life-long friends and Maze, a renowned artist, encouraged Churchill to develop his drawing and painting techniques.
