Objective: Help the children improve their horrible school playground. Not everyone wants new games to play, have quiet areas to sit and read or even improve road safety at the school entrance!
Team member Seònaid introduces the activity and she is available to offer advice.
The three characters to please are Màiri, Toby and A' Mhgn. Fhriseal.
Màiri, a pupil at the school, wants:
• a quiet garden
• improved road safety at the school entrance
• children to be allowed to stay in to read.
Toby, a pupil at the school, wants:
• proper games to play
• improved road safety at the school entrance
• a garden where he can help to grow vegetables
• children to be allowed to stay in and use the computers
• a wildlife garden.
A' Mhgn. Fhriseal, a parent and a dinner lady, wants:
• a wide choice of games for the children to play
• improved road safety at the school entrance
• a quiet area for children at playtime.
Improvements
The user can make the following improvements to the park:
• benches and picnic tables
• flowers and vegetables
• playground games and equipment
• water features
• litter and recycling bins
• bird tables, windsocks and a wheelchair ramp
• road safety features
• new rules and signs.
Activities
The following activities must be completed to unlock resources:
• Research Eco-school Project
Listen to a clip of primary school children who formed an eco-school council. Answer the questions to win some reading seats.
• Research Playground
Watch a short video about securing a new community adventure playground. Answer the questions to win adventure playground equipment.
• Fundraising
Plan a fundraising event to raise money to buy adventure playground equipment.
• Resolve Road Safety Conflict
Listen to the different views on road safety outside the school. Choose a plan that is a practical compromise and gets at least two of the three votes to win road safety features.
• Letter Writing
Persuade the head teacher to create a new school rule allowing pupils to stay in during playtime.
