| Wednesday, 31 July, 2002, 08:03 GMT 09:03 UK Holiday death girl flown home ![]() Aynsley and her family pictured just before the break The body of a seven-year-old girl from west Wales who died after being rescued from a swimming pool in Italy is due back in Wales. Aynsley Daniels, from Llanelli, had been on holiday with her grandparents and other family members.
Llanelli residents raised the 3,500 needed to fly her body home because the family's holiday insurance did not cover the bill. Aynsley had been with relatives in a deep pool at the holiday complex in northen Italy when she swallowed a large amount of water and became ill. A helicopter and paramedics landed at the scene within minutes after fellow holidaymaker Gianpaolo Reguitti raised the alarm. She was given a heart massage by a doctor, before being flown to the intensive care unit at Brescia's Civil Hospital. Her parents, Stuart and Andrea, flew out to be at her bedside, but she died on Saturday 28 July after spending eight days in a coma.
The holiday party was only covered by basic holiday insurance - which did not cover the cost of bringing her body home. Friends in Llanelli who wanted to help set out to raise money. Llanelli MP Denzil Davies also became involved in the case. "It is a dreadful thing - appalling. It must be awful for the whole family," he said. Earlier this week, neighbours in Llanelli spoke of their shock. Anne Marie Smith, who lives opposite the family on Felinfoel Road, said her own six-year-old daughter, Crystal, attended Old Road Primary School with Aynsley. "She's a very nice, bubbly little girl," she said. "This is so terrible. It must be shocking for the family. "I know they have recently had a new baby boy so the whole situation must be even more difficult for them at the moment." | See also: 10 Jan 00 | UK 08 Jan 02 | Scotland 28 May 00 | Wales 27 Jul 00 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
