An investigation has begun into how a three-year-old boy died in a swimming pool accident at a west Wales caravan park.

Nicholas Thomas Christopher, from Llwynypia, Tonypandy, in south Wales, was on a three day family break when the accident happened at the Fishguard Holiday Park on Saturday night.

Detective Inspector Jim Morris, of Dyfed-Powys Police, said it appeared that Nicholas had wandered off at 2015 BST while his parents were in the park's clubhouse.

Nicky was a lovely little boy and this is just awful.

He was found by another holidaymaker at 2110 BST and died despite efforts to revive him.

Safety officials from Pembrokeshire County Council will investigate the incident and their efforts will focus on whether the pool was covered, said police.

Holidaymakers at the site said they were shocked at the boy's death, which is not being treated as suspicious.

Nicholas was the second youngest of seven children.

It is understood his father Terry had promised to take the children camping for the holiday weekend.

A family spokesman said: "The kids loved going in the tent camping - but it was a real washout the last time they went.

"I saw Terry on Friday and he said he was going to try this caravan park in Fishguard for a change.

"It is a terrible tragedy but we don't really know what happened.

'Wandered off'

"Nicky was a lovely little boy and this is just awful."

A police spokesman said: "This is a further reminder of the dangers of young children being exposed to the dangers of pools.

"It seems like a tragic accident. The family are very upset.

"We are trying to establish how, on the face of it, he wandered off from his parents."

The caravan site has been a holiday spot since the 1960s and the 100 caravans on the site are privately owned.
